yea, but the point was that it wasn't one object that lasted forever. it was an object studied by the hero and then recreated by the hero when he had a certain weakness of mind. a mantle could be an object that is worn like a helm, although unlikely, maybe it is a cloak, or a medallion. but the point is, maybe the leveller spirit, is really a powerful dream spell that manifests itself as an object(at user's discression) so it could be balors sword, his helm, his cloak, anything, but by wearing that, he has the powers of the leveller, and when another hero presents himself, the item is known to him, even if others do not know, because he is destined to take that object and study it, and becme the leveller.
points at balor's really cool sword. alric could have gone and thrown the head in for show, and gone back to get the sword and studied it, of course, for the purpose of maybe undoing the leveller, but by doing so really learning how to make its magics through and through. then when soulblighter unthinkingly presents himself as a target, alric, who is still in a sain mind frame, creates Balmung for the purpose of defeating soulblighter. it doesn't work though, because soulblighter is still alive because of the same magics that balors sword is still working and holding together, and so balmung breaks, and when it breaks, a little of the leveller magic in alric is released and he is able to kill soulblighter, and maybe unknowingly ending the cycle, because his experiance with the magic of the leveller so early on in his time with it acted as a vaccine, and therefor, he will not become the leveller.
