: I think you’re misunderstanding the meaning of the word
: “canon.” By it’s very definition canon is “the
: authentic works of a writer” or “a sanctioned or
: accepted group or body of related works.” By this
: definition only the original creator, or parties that
: the creator specifically identifies, can create
: continuing or derivative works that are canon. Think
: of it like this: Bungie created Myth and its follow
: up, Myth II. As the creators of this work, Bungie
: owned the intellectual property rights to the Myth
: story and characters. Anyone else could create
: derivative works, but could not distribute them for
: profit. Bungie, having this control over Myth and its
: characters, could contradict any works of fan fiction
: that they chose to. This meant that only those works
: created by Bungie could be taken as “truth” as every
: other work could be subject to change at a later date.
: Later, Bungie sold the rights to Myth to Take Two
: Interactive, thus giving them the same level of
: control over the fiction, and the same right to
: contribute to the canon as they see fit.
