: I remember the XVII (17th) and two other legions being
: sent to Germania by a Augustus...ambushed...and
: slaughtered to the last. I don't know about the VII.
Well, I don't know about Celts in Gaul, but in 9 A.D. Quinctilius Varus, then Governor of Germania, led Roman legions XVII, XVIII, and XIX, as well as six cohorts and cavalry into the Teutoburg Forest in Germany where they were ambushed by Germanic forces under Arminius, a German general and former member of the Roman Army.
The Romans were crushed. Roughly 20,000 Roman soldiers were killed. No Roman legion would ever again be named XVII, XVIII, or XIX.
