We wouldn't say that Lee barely survived, though, and that phrasing certainly suggests that it was the Watcher himself who nearly died. We can talk about a person OR an army being beaten (which is what clobbered would mean in this situation), but we never talk about an army dying. Also, powerful Archmages and others seem to battle each other more than pitting (or just pitting) their armies against each other. If you'll remember, Rabican and Shiver dueled against each other on the first night of the siege of Madrigal, and instead of pitting two armies against each other, Shiver and the Deceiver go to battle with rather piddling forces to assist them. A good reason for mages battling each other directly, rather than with armies (or perhaps, rather than just with armies), is that they have to keep each other from blowing the crap out of gigantic chunks of each other's armies (which powerful Archmages can do).
