Sorry, but... we knew that already.
Although... in answer to Myrmidonnes' question, my guess is that they are similar to Tolkien's elves in one vital way: being such long-lived creatures, it takes them /ages/ to replenish numbers lost in war, and are probably pretty rare to begin with. Hence, to go to battle at all means a defeat in the long term, regardless of said battle's outcome. Presumably, the Forest Giants considered the War Against Soulblighter to be of less world shattering importance (no pun indended) than the Great War- and in any case, it is unlikely that they would have ever joined Alric's cause while their blood enemies, the Trow, stood under the banner of the Light.
