hmm i remember thinking of Dan Simmon's Hyperion, the shrike looks JUST like the other form of the Mahir... I remember this because Smeagol reccomended reading the Hyperion series at the same time he reccomended reading The Black Company, (which seems to be where Gurps got the Mahir creation thing) so when I was looking for similaritys between TBC I saw the similarity between the Shrike in Hyperion and the other form of the Mahir. If smeagol was still here he could tell you a bit more about this, but if you want to you can pick up a copy of Dan Simmon's Hyperion... The paper back version has a picture of the shrike right on it (Though it looks an ittybit different than as its described in the book)
