OK. The armor was a complete fake made up by the head to get rid of Alric. The Head wanted to make sure that Alric got killed, so he could be held in high regards by the Deceiver, and betray him too.

Shadows and Whispers should be in the Seventeenth Year of the War: 'apparently, that thing had been double-crossing us ever since we dug it out of the ground last summer'. The narrator said that in May or June of the 18th year. 'It wasn't till after the disaster at Forest Heart'.
