Two things, One it is not clear if he was a king, there was no prefix to his name.
Two, it has become clear to me through many texts and Pre-release info that Alric was not king of the Province, he was king of the Southern Provinces, seperate from the free cities of the North. It said on the old Bungie website that the Warriors were refugees from better armies than your own. It is said that Alric is the once king of the Southern Provinces. The southern provinces fell and Alric escaped, now taking part inthe Democracy that is the Avatara.
