If this is Michael Crichton's 13th Warrior, my understanding of Crichton is that he is, first and foremost, an author pandering to his audience, not a historian. He's somewhat notorious for things like the amber-mosquito DNA, and I wouldn't put it past him to mix up a few gods to make his story more interesting.
As for Nyx, the goddess mentioned is also called Nox. She is indeed a night goddess, the daughter of Chaos, and as Doom's post suggested, of Grecian origin. The corresponding Norse goddess is named Nott, and seems quite divergent from her Greek counterpart. While it would be interesting if the personalities of one of these goddesses reflected that of their Myth namesake, it seems to me that the similarity of names is the extent of their association.
I suppose I ought to introduce myself as well. I posted for a while a few years ago, as Lucan. I've been lurking from time to time and felt like getting re-involved. Woot.
