In Response To: Re: Myth 3 Story Information??? (Dietrichias)

: Well gee thanks Seraph for the Politeness Award and
: everyone else with their responses to my original
: post. Although it seems to me my original question
: still remains unanswered. This is perhaps my fault for
: not organizing my original questions more clearly (as
: in numbering my questions #1, #2, etc. and to have
: with multiple choice answers) Also I apologize for not
: spending all of my free time browsing the Asylum
: forums as seems to be a requirement for posting any
: message here as anyone who hasn't had the entire list
: of posts, threads, and responses memorized like their
: native alphabet tend to get ridiculed and labeled a
: newbie by our more frequent forum audience members.

I would like to welcome you, Dietrichias. If you've read the site as you say you probably already know who I am; I basically built this whole thing out of rubble. I want you - and everyone else - to know that for whatever authority my word still holds here, I don't approve of any of this newbie-bashing. Most of the people doing the bashing I still consider newbies myself.

Reading everything is certainly not a requirement. When I did post here, probably half of my messages were simply addressing simple questions raised by newcomers to the forum. Which is probably why the current generation here behaves as they do - these are the kids who started coming around right as I left, so they've had no proper adult supervision to tame them. (Not to discredit Gholsy and Zan, to whom I am very grateful for taking care of my baby as much as they can afford to).

: Although I have spent some time browsing and reading
: articles in Legends and Lore, Delusions, the
: Encyclopedia, and even the Asylum rants (all way back
: during the days when this site was part of the
: nontoxic.org server)

Whoa... if you remember Nontoxic you're definitely not a newbie :-)

: Also Gholsbane thank you for refering me to the update on
: the status of the Head in the Delusions section of
: this server as well as all the Myth 3 threads but in
: fact I was aware of these articles and posts long
: before I posted my message. But it was quite some time
: ago that I have browsed the Delusions section and I
: did feel that my question was original in context of
: other's Myth 3 posts in the Asylum. I in fact did read
: much of the Asylum posts before even considering
: posting a message of my own. Apparently you have to
: have a PhD in "Myth"ology and to memorize
: every article found at myth.bungie.org to ask simple
: questions in the Asylum.

It would seem that way, but it is a sad state of being. All you newbies - the ones making fun of the newer newbies - take it from someone who's spent his entire life knowing more than nearly everbody else around him, in almost every context. It's one thing to know you're really damn smart; to know you know more about something than someone else, or are more capable; and it's OK to feel superior because of it. I certainly do, it's where practially any semblance of self-esteem I have comes from.

But like Spiderman said, "With great power comes great responsibility." A part of being "better" than others is respecting them as though they were your equals, even if they're not. If you have superior skill or intellect or knowledge than someone and you treat them poorly for it, then that disrespect makes you in some ways worse than them, and equally counterweights any superior traits you may have, and in the end you wind up just the same as the people you're looking down on.

: Anyways enough of my venting, sorry if is a little
: incoherent I'm currently watching late night tv will
: composing this message. Please bear with me. My one
: and only question is: 1. Why has the encyclopedia not
: been updated to include new information brought to
: light in Myth 3: The Wolf Age. Is it because...
: a.) Lack of time/interest of the myth.bungie.org
: webmasters?
: -or-
: b.) Many of the myth.bungie.org administrators consider
: Myth 3 a third-party extension of the myth series?
: -or-
: c.) Like many of us fellow Americans (myself included)
: chronically lazy?

I built the Encyclopedia as my last great project before I spontaneously grew a life (social, school, and work) and had to leave this site behind. It was never quite finished to begin with - it's still missing lots of info from GURPS and Tales and so on, and the Timeline was never completed (the Timeline, if it ever gets done, will go a long way to demonstrate the inconsistancies between different sources, what with seeing the same event listed three different places and so on). I was gone by the time M3 came out. Ghols and Zan don't have much time either, so I think it's mostly A. Though we as a consensus don't really consider Myth 3 canon for the most part, it is an official source and should be listed here as food for thought.

: this site in 1999)

Welcome back!

: P.S. Ever heard of welcoming new posters with the word
: "Welcome?" as opposed to stating "Hi
: douchebag, you have no idea of what you're talking
: about do you?"

Huh... you know, that's a brilliant idea. I wonder why nobody's ever thought of it before. [glares around the Forum]
