He was an Avatara who was turned from the Light by Balor, but then brought back to the Light by Alric. Likewise, I think Damas may have been turned from the Light by Moagim but brought back to the Light by Connacht, only to later turn Dark again.

Connacht did use avatara (plural of avatara is avatara; avatara is actually the plural of avatar, but Bungie uses it as singular as well as plural). An avatara in Myth is simply a powerfull magician. Connacht himself was an avatara. Damas may have been considered an avatara. The Head claimed to be one of Connacht's avatara.

And that's a good point that the hooded guy could be Mazzarin.
