Certianly all the "Heroes" can be very distrubing. COnnacht knowingly sacrifices all the Oghre to buy some time for Men, and Alric sacrfices the Legion to buy himself time. Necessary, probably, but they show no regrets about the massive loss of life. I've stated this elsewhere, but perhaps the Leveller spirit deluded the Heroes into thinking they were still fighting against evil, or exaggereated their bad aspects, or both.
