: As Killing Duck says (so I shouldn't bother repeating it
: but I love to hear myself type), Soulblighter never
: dressed like a Heron Guard or received a Heron Guard
: name, as far as we know. I think he came with Connacht
: from east of the Empire. Yes, it is strange that an
: evil person would manage to get in good with Connacht,
: but The Head managed to win the trust of the Nine. I
: doubt that "ancient evil" means
: "ancient and currently evil," simply because
: it's being contrasted with "turned from the
: Light." In order to have the opposite meaning to
: this, "ancient evil" must mean "ancient
: and always evil," contrasting with those who were
: once good. My thoughts on Soulblighter are that he was
: a relatively petty evil, not a Fallen Lord, during
: Moagim's reign, and that he was not even noticed by
: the champions of the Light such as Connacht. Toward
: the end of the war Damas realized that the Dark was
: not going to win and decided he'd better join the
: winning team. So he appeared out of nowhere, probably
: offering some choice bits of information about the
: Dark just as The Head did, and became Connacht's
: trusted advisor. He may have spent the Wind Age trying
: to corrupt Connacht, and felt that he had triumphed
: when Connacht became Balor (although, unbeknownst to
: him, the cycle was responsible for this); hence he
: took the name Soulblighter from this perceived
: accomplishment. Oh, one more thing; if Damas was evil
: before Connacht was, it would explain why Soulblighter
: is willing to use Myrkridia; whereas Connacht was a
: good guy when he first encountered them and so
: developed a lasting loathing for them, Soulblighter
: was already evil and so approved of the myrks from Day
: One. Feel free to start a new thread if you think
: there's enough evidence to discuss this further;
: personally, I'm not sure where to go from here, other
: than "that's my opinion and that's all there is
: to it."

Between your post and Forrest's down below it made me think of some relation between Damas and the Spider-cult. Indeed Connacht truely hated the Myrkridia, so the Smiths of Muirthmne forged the Tain. Now we know that Soulblighter had no problem with the Myrkridia and in fact sought out the Summoner to ressurrect them. So this would seem that Soulblighter in fact knew of their effectiveness in combat.

Another point is that the Spider-cult arose from the Smiths of Muirthmne. In the ghost flavors we learn much about the association between the Spider-cult and the Myrkridia.

Spider flavor:
ģConnacht could no longer ignore the atrocities committed by the Spider-cult but when he assailed their shrines, no trace could be found of the Smiths of Muirthemne or their followers...ī

Myrkridia Ghost flavor:
ģ[Many of them] were slain when they attacked Muirthemne, and their cursed blood seeped into the ground... not every mysterious disappearance could be traced back to the Spider-cults.ī

Now from the Spider flavor, it says that no trace of the Smiths of Muirthmne or their followers could be found, does this mean that they fled or were destroyed? And what disappeared that is spoken of in the Myrkridia flavor?

It seems that Damas was in some way connected to these events. If he is indeed an ancient evil then he must have been proficient in the black arts by the time Connacht took power. Perhaps he came back from his hidden temple and saw that Moagim was losing, so he changed sides. This is just menial speculation though.

So indeed we see a strong connection between the Tain and the Spider-cult. And it is only amplified by the Inside the Tain piece within the Tales from Myth TFL comic. Now there is also some type of connection between the Myrkridia and the Spider-cult as well. This one is very vague however, since the Tain was created to help destroy the Myrkridia, or so we were told.

The connection between Damas, the Myrkridia, the Spider-cult, the Smiths of Muirthmne and the Tain are all evident, but trying to understand the true associatin between them is very difficult. So if you have any ideas or theories that can be drawn from evidence, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Pimpyō
