I played the Myth demo before the game was released, but found multiplayer too difficult to understand. Mostly it was because the AI sucked and the camera was too low. But single player was sweet. I remember getting all excited when on my 5th or 6th attempt (it took 7) to beat Crow's Bridge my dwarf destroyed all of my warriors in one fell sweep. Laughing out loud indeed. :)
November 14th I was cruising the mall, because I heard a rumor that EB had shipped copies of Myth to their stores early. Sure enough, there was the Win95 box a day early. I asked the guy if he knew the CD was dual platform, but in typical EB form the guy looked at the box and said it was Windows only. I knew better and went home to install the game on my Mac. :)
TFL... ah TFL. Version 1.0 was the time to beat the game--that was hardcore Myth (bad AI, no zoom out, . 1.1 made things so easy. :) It didn't take too long to beat the game... a week or so of late, late nights... but then came multiplayer. Mmmm.
It was sometime in early December that I ran across one of Belgarion's games and became part of the group later known as Civil Disorder. It was fun going through thee 1.2 resets... everyone was either an emp or a dagger while Bungie tried to fix the game rankings. That was around January '98. Sometime in like March or April I got chosen to be a B.net admin... and was the first (and last?) person to tell Pigseye I needed a day to think about it. Heh. :)
Civil was the bomb... we eventually turned it into an order so that some of us could participate in the Knights of Eblis tournament. We knew we were good, and probably the best, but in the end we took something like 3rd. Then MWC rolled in, KoE2, all the others... it took until the end of '98 for civil to finally win a tournament. It was Best of the Maps (on carnage), in which we defeated BMF in the finals. Sweet match... we were down 2 games in a best of 5, and came back to win. Whoot!
Ah, and who can forget the games of weirdness, such as Light vs Dark? Madly tapping the mouse while pressing the arrows keys or something... heh. And the first new map was Yeti I believe... stupid plugins made OOS games a living nightmare though (MWC'98 especially).
I preordered Myth 2 to reserve my login, but I got the game later than everyone else (US mail). Which wasn't a problem, because multiplayer was such a bug fest. Special events in Myth 2... Civil Order couldn't be beaten, I ended up running MWC2k, and while I was interning at Bungie I managed to learn how to use Fear and Loathing.
As far as the Asylum goes, I've always liked the Myth story. But for MWC2k I was supposed to write a story, so I had to do research to make sure I was in sync, so I peeked around here in early 2000.
Myth, on the whole, is the best money I've ever spent on a game. Myth 3... as correct as the story might be, it's not as good as Bungie's (either for plot or style). But I give the graphics and gameplay a hearty thumbs up, and really hope playmyth comes through with its updates.
