Twenty thousand men changes to twenty-two hundred survivors in the space of less than a year.

To have sustained similar losses throughout that time from fighting the Fallen alone would have meant massive casualties and I don't think they ever seemed to be as high as that.

Also, don't forget the mosquitoes and leeches of the marsh.
