There are two ways you claim a throne in the real world (the world that Bungie came from). You either seize the power, or inherit it. Succession is hardly straightforward... but in general, it's a bloodline thing (i.e. Alric's ancestors were rulers of the Cath Bruig). Just because Alric is King in Madrigal now doesn't mean that he grew up there, nor that there was even a King there before him. All we know for *certain* is that Alric was a King, and that during his youth Mauriac was his regent. Muirthemne was destroyed more than 110 years ago (in Myth 2)... maybe that's where you're getting hung up. By the time Alric was King, the seat of power in the Empire had already been destroyed.
