Senex Silvae did a similar thing. I'm not a scripter, but if I remember each death left an invisible projectile. Then, when your character 'taunted' near it, it would search inside a polygon (radius of the unit), and if it found the projectile it would delete it and create a Ghost unit with the suitable smoke and mirrors to make it look cool.

Datax made it. I'd say IronDuke and Discordia, if they're ever around, could tell you the actual code.
