Well, the Romans had "Syrian Archers", for the entire run of their civilization since they conquered Syria. Heh, that doesn't mean every single sagittarius in the Legions was from Syria; the first ones were, though, and some great auxiliaries at that. I'm guessing the same is true for England's "Welsh Archers", that the first longbowmen were from Wales, and the title was bestoyed upon any archer in the armies that followed, despite his country of origin.
