In Response To: Ireland, Scottland, and Freedom *PIC* (Archer »))
: I've recently become very interested in one half of my
: heritage, my (predominantly) Irish and Scottish side.
: Since I'm aware of at least a few natives of the
: British Isles that are here, I'd like to ask the
: opinions of all those familiar with the ancient to
: present history of Ireland, Scottland, and the other
: composite lands of the region.
I'm not all, and probably not even mostly Irish, but I'm interested too if anyone knows more.
: For instance, watching Braveheart again led me to ask
: the question...if the Scotts "won", then why
: is it the country was still made a part of Great
: Britain, if I may ask so indelicately? I'm totally
: ignorant of that history.
: I'm also familiar with how there is a new Scottish
: Parliament and act of self-determination coming
: about...? So, if you'd humor my uninformity, I'd love
: to hear all about the last Celtic lands and their
: people.
Well, I'm not the best person to ask but I'll do me best.
I haven't seen the whole of Braveheart, but the real life climatic battle for William Wallace, the infamous Battle of Falkirk was lost horribily.
English (Welsh technically) longbowmen tore apart the Scots ranks and then English knights destroyed the rest of the army.
However, about...*Thinks of a moment* 10? 15? years latter, at the Battle of Bannockburn, Edward II got his butt kicked, and that's the only thing I can think of that qualifies for a "win" for the Scots that could happen late in the movie.
Several centuries later, the late 1500s or early 1600s, Scotland was conquered, and I'm not sure about the details offhand, I just know that's how come the English made it part of the United Kingdom, since I think technically Great Britan is the island.
In any case, I'm not sure about most of this, and I'd also welcome more information.
By the way, on the present issues, is anyone in here on one side or the other of the question of Ireland? (Catholic or Protestant side?)
Seraph
P.S. Maybe that's way you were so firery earlier...yer Irish temper?
*Laughs out Loud*
