This is what I was refering to in "granted some people have had trouble practicing that". If the constitution was written any other way, without identifying the rights of men that the founding fathers wished to see preserved, slavery would still be a part of our society, women still wouldn't be able to vote, and we'd probably still be a confederacy.
I said what I said: the US constitution was the first to recognize all men as equal under the law. It was a response to a comment, not invitation to argue about slavery (which is hardly an argument at all).
