: I am not proud of being an American because of several
: things.
: One, how does it matter?
It matters due to the nature of your arguments. It would help to understand where you are coming from to understand why you, Seraph (or anyone, for that matter) thinks the way they do. In the end, though, I suppose it doesn't really matter. I guess I just want to see why you feel the way you feel.
: Two, this country isn't exactly a model of democracy
: (It's good, but not numero uno or anything)
I never said it was. But being proud of your nationality sometimes has to go beyond your base government.
: Three, I don't have anything I preticularly support here
: that is uniquely American.
You're what? 16? I think I remember that correctly. Have you had American history yet? (Yes, I know a country's history can be one-sided at times, but do some research on your own)
: Four, what does being American mean?
If you don't know that, then stating that you 'are not proud of being an American' has no value anyway. Besides, it's not any one thing. I'm not sure that any one person can give you a definition of what it means to be an American, or a German, Italian, etc... That's something you kind of have to figure out for yourself.
: Now, if you guys will be kind enough to leave my name out
: of the subject area with this, we can all get on with
: our lives, and forget that I ever brought up this line
: of thought.
It's too late. You can't hide from us now. :) That's one thing a lot of us like about forums; we can beat a subject to death until we're satisfied.
: It hasn't really done any good, and has stired up
: unwanted and unjust division.
One thing I've noticed about life is, you'll never fully agree with any other person. That's fine. It keeps it interesting. Something else I've noticed about life is, that I don't really care to be friends with someone that I can't have differences with and still not get along on some middle ground; and to put those differences behind us. Boy, in the past we've had some doozies here. Yet, eventually, we all got over it, and went on to discuss a myriad of other things and never look back. I may have disagreed with a few people from time to time, but we're still friends anyway. Another example: my wife and I will usually have discussions about certain things (a lot of times political). We both have similar views, but on a few occasions, our views differ greatly. Instead of having knock-down dragouts, we discuss it thouroughly. I won't always agree with her, she won't always agree with me. At the end of the discussion we agree to disagree, and the matter is forgotten. On with life.
: Now, I'm going to try and forget that I ever said
: anything in this line of thought, and if anyone wants
: to talk to me about it, I can be e-mailed.
E-mails are only good if you want to have a direct flame war. I'm sure nobody wants to do that.
: Good day.
To you too. Don't take this post as a flame. Just stating my opinion, as these type of posts should be. :)
