I've thought of this, but I've also thought that, especially with Alric's and Soulblighter's little exchange in the Balmung-wielding mission, that maybe Bungie were trying to show that sometimes, in order to defeat greta evils, great sacrifices must be made. I think that it's open as to which is "right", maybe both.
PS, notice the ";)" following my comment about goodness and killing your own men. ;)
