Sure, Alric in and of himself is a good guy. But the question is - is he destined to become the next leveller, as Connacht (another good guy) did. If so, his character will be corrupted and there's nothing he can do to prevent it.
Also I'd question whether sending thousands of men to the slaughter is proof of being "good". It's certainly the case that he had no choice but to do this, but nevertheless the ability to sacrifice your own men that way could lead to a hardening of heart and mind, and eventually a reckless disregard for the lives of others.
