Oh, and about the whole caves thing: think underground city like Moria. This is what I've always thoguht and it makes the most snese. After all, as the amnual says they are
"masters of...stone", why would they live in grotty old caves?
Btw, in Myth III when Myrgard is besieged that's definately a gate going to an underground complex of some sort.
