: Well, its also said that he was in the habit of
: disappearing into the east then returning with worse
: evils,

well I beleive that it wasnt him going off and getting more magic but it was him going off to the EAST where he hid all of the "Objects of Tremendous Magical Power" like the Tain or the Sunhammer if your going by myth 3 (which I do in parts) and it does seem like the sunhammer was used to level muirthemne so its not really him going to the east and becoming a more powerful mage its him going to the east and getting some stuff thats nifty... it doesnt take a lot of thaumatic power to use the sunhammer... conacht could use it and he was a barbarian... besides the necromancy, the use of objects doesnt seem to give sorcery

im guessing he had glimpsed into the total codex to learn where the summoner would be born back in TFL but was unable to use it because of balors hate for the myrimidons. Thats why he wasnt able to just find him
he had to singlehandedly butcher the entire citry of (I think) Strand... that took quite a while

of course he still could have used the time in the east to become a better magician too while he was at it
... the giant deceiver trapping stone golem and the shatter-the-cloud-spine spell are quite impressive...

expecially since I always beleived that the deceiver was one of the most powerful mages (the flavor says that he beat the 2nd or 3rd most powerfull mage in living history... so wouldnt that make him the 1st or 2nd most powerfull mage in history?)
