i think hes too smart : )
he was overcome with rage that alric dared plant the myrkridian standard so near his fortress, so he gathered the nearest troops he could muster (most of his forces were wiping up the legion) and marched to battle.
He must have realised that Alric is not stupid...he must have lured him out there for a reason. Therefore he sent his forces after you rather than coming too closely himself. Something like that. He knew alric had SOMETHING up his sleeve, he just had no idea it was an Eblis Stone.
