Alric became Emperor because he was alrady king, All he did was put on the Eblis crown and rename the Province Cath Bruig Empire and change the title.
Whether or not Connacht was the next in line, its not a good idea to start a reign by killing the Emperors Advisor.
Imagine your a noble and Connacht explaining what happened:
Noble:You killed the advisor to the crown!!
Connacht:Yes, but he was the Leveller.
Noble:No he wasn't, Moagim was.
Connacht:No no no, Moagim was just his puppet.
Noble:What kind of Psycho are you, now we've lost the alliegence of the Warlocks, now that Mjarins dead, there's no way I'm sending trrops to aid your army.
Connacht:Dang
Or:
Connacht:Mjarin died bravely fighting the Leveller Moagim
Noble:Hurrah, we pledge our alliegence to Connacht.
To put it in another way, A new President is elected, he then personally kills Satan/Suddam Hussein/etc. then kills the former Vice-President and says no HE was Satan/Hussein/etc.
I would think that the people would have as hard a time believing that Mjarin was the Leveller as ye do.
