Balor didn't die before schedule, Alric just failed to follow him. In the only Dark Age we have recorded history on, both Hero and Leveller died and the Leveller's minions terrorized the world for a millenium. If Alric had died, how do you think the world would have held up against the remaining undead, the Ghols, the Fetch, and so on, not to mention Myrdred's remaining armies, and then the eventual return of Soulblighter, Shiver and the Myrkridia? It would most certainly be Dark. If Alric dies soon, it could still turn Dark.
