Hm. Looking back, you may be right, I was never extremely well-versed in that stuff. I think I recall something abotu Charlemagne giving the sword to Roland. Or maybe it was Cortana he gave to him. Or something. Anyway, I just knew that Durandal and Cortana wound up both being swords from that type of thing, and Bungie AI's. Lemme see if I can't dig up the old info on Marathon's Story and get back on that.

Apparently Joyeuse means "Little Girl" in French (as I know from being the butt of some rather immature jokes in my time), but I dunno if that has any bearing on the name of the sword.
