I believe the Soulblighter fear of the mandrake from the Great Devoid is more along the lines of a stigma from his previous life. Since Soulblighter was Damas, the head of the heron guard during the Wind Age, he would have a deep psychological connection. Since he has become dark, where once he was light, it would stem that the element which once gave him life immortal in service to good would stand against him as a bane of his now twisted existance. Sort of a bitter irony. One could also say the reason that the mandrake is dangerous to undead is because it harnesses living energy, like breathing on embers to start a fire, but when it blows on the cold ashes of undeath, it wipes them away, if you'll forgive my bad poetry.
