Alright, I agree with a lot of your anticlimactic sarcasm. I was expecting much more from it. Of course Bungie never gave us a lot of the pieces either, but at least it had a logical progression to it.
I was more upset in the sequencing and progression of the game. Just as you said in your post, it was like one thing followed by a totally irrelevant next. The amulet and Kyrand were the first sign of such a lack in the plot. Alright we are going to visit the mage named Kyrand, he is dead or so I would assume from his tomb. But it is not until later that we uncover why we are even here. I still don't know what the hell the amulet does or represents though, so why exactly do we need it?
Going in sequence, we now arrive beyond the tomb in a marshy valley. Alright, the fetch make a nice strategic touch, but no story behind them. Once again the wasps are found and so is Chimera. But isn't the level called The Archer, when do we get to meet him and why is he all the way out here? So we finally meet ne'Ric, he doesn't miss this time and makes a point of it, the end.
So it is this lack of plot that keeps coming back. Every now and then we get another piece of the story but even after you put it all together there isn't much to make of it. It's like buying a new puzzle and having some of the pieces missing.
The pregame for level 8, The Fiend, tried to tie it all together, but it fell way short of the mark. Still no word on what the amulet does, besides hold memories. Perhaps a secret on how to destroy Cartucke is contained within, I doubt it.
So we finally find the area and face off against Cartucke. Hmmm... arrows go right through him, maybe I should send my melee in. Damn, too bad the computer took away my heroes. So I fight and fight, Mahir keep showing up, but why do they defend Cartucke? Are they his servants? Uh oh, those pillars finally started shooting lightning, I'm toast. Still no heroes to control. Oh wait, here they come... uh oh, there they go. Shoot already you slow archer, finally. Game ends.
A lot of hype for a lack-luster ending. I still don't know why we had to have the amulet or why he Cartucke couldn't escape. He was imprisoned by Kyrand it said, but within those pillar things or where? It left more questions than answers and even less of the plot was revealed tean before.
It is still more fun in Coop than Solo, I am finding it more enjoyable with friends since we can at least talk during the slow times while we spend the next 40 minutes beating a single map.
I guess I was expecting a true Myth story even in 8 small episodes, even 1/3 of the Myth story would have been alright. To think of all the details they could have done an entire series on and they choose the daughter and the demon from somewhere over there.
Just for fun, here is Cartucke's flavor...
"For a thousand years, in the cold void between stars, it waited. Finally, offered a gateway into the waking world, it burst into the lands of men, assuming a new form drawn from the nightmares of it's victims."
