I very much liked the short story, I wish there was more. It was very good and had some emotion in it, which is not common in other writings of such short length. If you have plans to expand it and put some more meat on it, please do, you have my vote!

I checked GURPS and it says "in 2431 A.E. Balor [...put] Muirthemne to the torch in an immense mystical blaze that created the Barrier[....]"
So I guess the Herons returned in the same year, or sometime very soon afterwards, because it doesn't say specifically when they returned but only when Balor attacked. I hope that helps.

PS- Others with GURPS might want to check in the book and see if more is said, though I doubt it, the possibility is there that I overlooked something.
