I love this view of the old-time Watcher. I suspect he was totally capable of busting wholesale ass but conserved his powers and stored them, like an overcrowded grain silo of magic energies. Which he unleashed upon poor Mazz.
Although the freed Watcher wasn't as powerful, I suspect that he still retained a good portion. I only say this because he did kill Rabican, and Alric only dared attack him in an ambush. Which meant that Alric wasn't confident enough he could deal with a prepared Watcher.
I love the Watcher. He's such an anomalous superpower of a man that I know so little about yet admire the character so much.
