In a defensive position, spears and pikes are deadly, no matter who you're facing. Why do you think the Greek City States, the vast bulk of whose armies were infantrymen, used spears as their primary weapons? There's not many who'll be saying much after you hit them with a halberd for that matter either.

Probably a factor of game balance. Molotov cocktails should be a lot less reliable too.
