In Response To: Re: Myth III (Lord Raven)

: No, I don't want you to stop, I just didn't see why you
: were applying the Lawful Good alignment to Heron Guard
: or the Lawful Evil alignment to others.

: To be realistic, we don't learn enough about Heron Guard
: in game to assign them the Lawful Good alignment as
: AD&D specifies it. They do follow the law, and they do
: follow precepts of good, but they don't fit the AD&D
: stereotype of a zealous, pious paladin or priest.

quoting the Icewind Dale manuel (computer game based on AD&D)

Lawful Good: Characters of this alignment believe an orderly, strong socity with a moral goverment makes life better for the majority of the people. When people respect the laws and help one another, socity as a whole prospers. Therefore, lawful good characters strive for those things that will bring the greatest benefit to the most people and cause the least harm. Lawful Good characters keep their word.

"...an orderly, strong socity with a moral goverment..."
The Cath Bruig Empire (in theory, I'm sure it's had bad Emperors)

"Lawful Good characters keep their word."
Now I may be stretching this, but that counts any oaths of fealty (feudal service) such as the Heron Guard duty to perserve the Emperor. We saw what happened when the 100 or so Heron Guards at Bagrada or where ever returned home to Muirthemne/Llancrafan. They were VERY upset with themselves. They had broken their oath to the Cath Bruig.

: In all fairness, is it possible to pigeon hole any
: 'class' or 'race' into a specific AD&D alignment? The
: Dwarves in Myth II are fighting for good, but you'd be
: hard pressed fitting any 'good' alignment to them.
: Certainly their indifference to accidentally blowing
: up their allies would tend towards neutrality.

Chaotic Good and drunk would be my guess.
But AD&D alignments are "active" not "passive".

: Just don't think alignment as AD&D specifies it works
: when describing characters from the Myth series, at
: least not as well as it does in the AD&D game system.

: LR

You're right that the D&D alignments work best for D&D, not Myth.
But as long as I can explain why an alignment makes sense, I'll probably continue to use it.

"Active"- You are, say Chaotic Evil because you do pyschopathic things, not the other way around.

"Passive" You are, say Lawful Neutral because it sounds cool.

Your alignments reflects your ideals (or anti-ideals for evil alignments) and actions.

The Heron Guards are not crusading Paladins, but that doesn't make them not Lawful Good. At least, not in its own right.
