: I have always believed that the dream of unlife (which
: was found by the Watcher) was used to *reanimate*
: corpses, not *resurrect* an actual person, and that
: was the thing used to make thrall, soulless, ghasts
: ect.
This seems sensible enough to me.
: My stance is based on the view that magic can be used as
: a life-preservation device, and not as a
: life-returning device. Death cannot be undone, imo, in
: the Myth universe and this can be backed up if one
: looks at my following points: 1. Claims that Shiver
: was brought back to life, from death, don't hold
: because she never was killed completely in the battle
: for Madrigal in the first place. She was put into a
: magical realm called "ether" (which some
: might know as the quintessence, or fifth element, of
: our own world's past) and therefore not necessarily
: killed. In addition, the game never says she was
: killed outright, she just had "fallen".
: 2. Claims that SB is back from the dead don't hold
: because he never experienced death to begin with: he
: simply lives in a preserved state of life. Hence his
: otherwise young appearance. It's like this: you take
: away the magic that preserves him, and he dies because
: of his lack of heart. Just like a person on life
: support dies when you unplug the technology which
: sustains that person. I don't think you'd call people
: on life support "undead", either.
These points are good but there's always the "Balor has been killed before" quote and the slightly dubious Moagim Reborn.
: Some others say that the dream of unlife was never found,
: and instead the thrall and armies of the undead were
: made with lesser necromantic magics. This view was
: held by a few bigshots some time back when, and my
: perspective therefore wasn't given much attention
I would actually tend to agree with this. Lesser magics would reanimate thrall but to return someone to their original form would require the Dream of Unlife. But maybe Bah'lal did find it and in this way, resurrected Balor giving him his old power and vitality and a little bit more. The same may apply to Moagim Reborn but after it was used, Connacht sunk Si'anwon where it was held. After all he was powerful enough to melt the Trow cities, why would Si'anwon be any different. (Sorry for those who take the Myth 3 manual as gospel).
