I agree that its quality wasn't quite as high as that of the game (we can guess which one Bungie cared about more), but it actually provided quite a bit of useful plot information. Besides the copious information from "Antero's Bestiary," we learned:
*that the Sword Age is the most recent one (based on info about the truce with the fir'Bolg in "Fang-Grinder")
*exactly how Rabican defeated Shiver (or at least were able to form more definite theories)
*about the nature of the Tain and the spider-world it connects to, allowing us to theorize more accurately about its purpose.
Based on this, I'd say it was a worthwhile creation.
