: Well, after downloading and beating Chimera I can say
: that it was fun, but I was rather disappointed by the
: story or lack thereof. It is truely an offshoot of
: Myth and adds nothing to the Myth storyline
: whatsoever. It brings about new characters and places
: but none of them share a link to Myth, with the
: excpetion of Four Bear Silent Oak.
: The story itself is meant to unfold as you play and a lot
: is given through dialogue, so make sure you pay
: attention. The series showcases an alternative pregame
: system, so sometimes it will be a story, other times a
: letter, or even more abstract things. I did enjoy
: them, but was rather distracted by them at first.
: I was disappointed in the levels overall, they were
: large, hard to find your end goal, and sometimes just
: boring. I can't tell you how many times my journeyman
: was placed next to the deep water just waiting for the
: wight to appear. I was hoping to enter Kyrand's tomb,
: but alas no matter how large the model was, we did
: not.
: The story was an interesting one, with each providing a
: piece of the story until it was revealed to you at the
: beginning of level 8, The Fiend . Kyrilla was fun to
: play as, but rather cheap at times as well (teleport
: to an area that you cannot walk on and use her as a
: soulless).
: At the very climactic ending I was left with my heart
: excited in anticipation of Cartucke and his demonic
: powers, but once the battle was over, I wanted more.
: He did nothing but sit there and let his Mahir and
: pillars attack you. It was quite a disappointment for
: such a good looking character.
: I knew Fenris was going to die from the start, of course
: they wouldn't leave a warrior like that alive for more
: action, but did they have to kill Chimera too?! I mean
: sure, it's one thing to take away one of the old
: characters, but to kill off the only other one with a
: unique sprite set was just mean. So now we are left
: with a Journeyman and a fir'Bolg, gee thanx.
: So as you can see I am not happy with Chimera. I expected
: much more from it, the secrets of Myth revealed if you
: will. Instead I got a new story that was all
: anticipation and no delivery. Let me hear your opinion
: on the matter.
: Sincerely,
: Pimpyō
First of all, Pimpy, I must say that you just ruined it. As much as I agree with you that the story is disappointing, I'd rather find it out for myself. MY GOD! I WAS ON THE LAST LEVEL! Anyway, it can't be avoided, so I'll just enter the discussion :)
I totally agree with you on how it wasn't good because there was barely any link to Myth. In fact, I must say that the whole story thing went against the whole point of Myth. There was no real greater evil, just a single demon, and it didn't even threaten the entire world! It was a good story in itself, but it just wasn't myth.
However, about the levels, I beleive you are about as far from the truth as you can get. There were 8 levels, so the fact that they were all huge and hard just made each one worth playing. Yes the objectives were extremely hard to find, but if they were easy, all 8 levels would be finished before you knew it, and it would suck even more.
The maps themselves were made with the kind of expertise that even I didn't expect, and the scripting was absolutely superb. Each new unit was made very well, and all in all, the gameplay was great. The story on the other hand, was a bit odd. There was nothing that explained what we wanted it to explain, but what do you expect? Did you really think BUNGIE(!!!) would give up all of it's secrets and tell you exactly what had been going on??? I mean, really people! Bungie would never do that.
With that aside, I must say that there is some very cool stuff that Chimera could be used for. There are all kinds of really nice new collections that could be used in any number of new plugins (ares I hope you're listening. CoD could use some neat new units). There is also some story that people could build on. So it wasn't linked to myth very much by itself, but by hell it could be if anybody put their mind to it! It all took place (I think) in the untamed lands, so we now know what the untamed lands are like (some of them at least) and could use that in stories later. There are also a lot of EXTREMELY cool scripting tricks and fear/loathing tricks that any aspiring mapmaker could use, etc.
Basically what I'm saying is I kinda agree with you, but I do think that Chimera was worth the 90 meg download. Every second of the thing was worth it.
