: I'm not a big Trow fan myself but I'd be interested to
: see how that would work

I think that could be good. Somewhere in the archives, there's a thread by me entitled Pila Troworum, which basically suggested that, since the Trow Empire is based on Rome, some Trow should have had throwing spears, which would probably have been of an effectiveness similar to a ballista. If we accept this, we end up with four Trow units for their golden age, which could be used to give them a system of war similar to the Manipular Legions of Republican Rome. I propose the following:
Trow Pilati: unarmoured Trow, armed with throwing spears. Perform a similar role to Republic Velites in that they are designed to hurl off a few volleys of spears before retreating back into the Trow lines.
Trow Gladiati: Trow with helmets, breastplates and greatswords. Perform a similar role to both Berserkers and Hastati in that they are intended to be the first line of attack or defence against the Trow's foes.
Trow Iron Warriors: Fulfilling the same role as Republican Principes, these are the elite, attack-and-destroy troops intended to move trough any holes that might appear in the Gladiati line in front of the and KIK the hell out of anybody who gets in their way.
Trow Triarii: Armed with glaives. While this diverges from the portrait given in Tales from TFL, I would recommend that they have armour similar to that of the Iron Warriors. These guys are the defensive veterans of the Trow Legions. Think of a Trow version of Sygian Knights (Myth3 style) and you won't be too far wrong. Of course, glaives are rather less unweildy than pikes are, so I imagine that these guys would have no minimum range.
Trow Iron Priests: have no real equivalent in Republican Rome unless you count Haruspexes, but hey, they're there.
