This is my personal intreptation of how Alric was "not a king" and how he "reclaimed his throne"
During TFL Alric had lost his kindom.
Balor controled the area known as the Province.
He had nothing to be King over, hence was not the King since that implies he was ruling something.
So after the War he reclaimed his kingdom and his throne (metaphorically perhaps) which Balor took from him.
Sort of like taking back your kingdom from a usurper
Since you are taking back what is yours, you are reclaiming it (perhaps for your family).
