I don't think the stuff about mandrake roots is necessarily wrong. In fact, it's not even as if Bungie made that up: /real/ mandrake roots are said to scream when their dug up, killing any human listener (actually, they don't, but they do have a disturbingly similar shape to that of a human child, which presumably led to the myth).
