Take the example of Superman, technicly he can be called pure good. If Superman was doing that he'd probably do something like fly backwards around teh world, or fight the battle on his own, or some other c***. Everybody lives except the bad guys, only one problem, BORING. Sacrificing the lives of people make interesting stories, which is why I think we should see more of it.
On your question, its tough, perhaps he could have sacrified fewer or gone himself to the battle, or given more time to figure out the Eblis stone etc. Either way Superman would have probably thought of a way, of course we'd all have said at the end, a c***, I paid money for this when I could have read this in a 5 buck comic book!

Bingo. Popular belief is that Balor, rather than spend all time spiriling down the hole, blew himself up so as to skip enduring eternal boredom and kill off a few of his enemies.
