Of course, if we go by Tolkien's suggestion that the old races are still there, but hidden away and few in number, then the potential for mayhem increases exponentially. Imagine: (Martel switches to "narrator voice"):

"Reaslising the need to halt the advance of the Leveller once more, the Dwarves marched out from their underground tunnels, bringing with them the War Golems (read: Battledroids) and rods of flame (read: plasma rifles) they had forged in their millenia of isolation. From the dense jungles of South America the Fir'bolg stalked, ready to lend their expert snipers and commandoes to the frey. With sorcery and technology combined, it seemed at first that the shambling Thrall could not stand before the reformed armies of Light. But it was not to be so. Across the world, Dark things stirred. The Ghols, embittered with distant memories of their ancient emnity with the Dwarves, threw in their lot with the Dark. In this age, it was paradise for a race of scavengers like the Ghols. With a little practice (and a not insignificant number of fatalities), a few Ghols learned how to use a rifle or bazooka, while others learned of the myriad things one could do with imaginative use of radioactive waste... In Norway, the doors of long forgotten crypts creaken open and from them filed the Myrmidons, ancient warriors harbouring an ancient fury. And, meanwhile, in the Orkneys, the cruise liner Hyperion came to a shuddering stop as it crashed into an unexpected rock jusr below the surface of the water. But not just any rock: "OW. U HIT QUASSARE VIS ON HED. I KIK U!"
