Ah, but in M3 prolgue, set AFTER M2, the bloke is a Jman, which leads me to believe that the Herons found their humbling Jman times as very useful, and helps them also to probably spot any who aren't morally-worthy to join the Heron because they are too arrogant, and so made people become Jmen before becoming Herons, as a kind of apprenticeship.
The prologue gives the impression that not all do this, though - mb younger people who show potential?
