In M2 it breaks into 2 large pieces, which I also call two large shards, which is what I meant.
I was also under the impression that Narsil did the same: two large fragments.

Could still break, could still be reforged, again by magic, probably even by Alric. Remember, Damas' super-tough skin that broke Balmung can only be magically-enhanced.
