I think they just didn't want to be involved in a war that would cost so many lives and mean a huge decrease in their own numbers. I think they just have a generally negative attitude towards war and just as they realised the Trow had "poisoned the soul of iron" think they suddenly realised that war had poisoned the soul of man. So, a mix of self-preservation and anti-war sentiments made them return to the seclusion and safety of the forest. I feel that if Murgen and Cu Roi hadn't appealed for their help then they would have remained in secrecy in the Forest and been untouchable by the Dark.
