Balmung breaks--you can see if you zoom in. What breaks it? Well, Soulblighter may not wear armor, but his skin is obviously tougher than any ordinary suit of armor. And Alric's swinging that sucker pretty hard. Maybe that's why Soulblighter ran--when someone hits you hard enough to break their magical weapon over you, you don't want to wait around to see what their uppercut feels like...
