If I remember correctly, the root in Sanskirt(I think that's it) for avatar is avatara (with a funny symbol over one the last letters). But the avatara in Myth do not seem to be demi gods. If they were, they would stomp all over the Fallen.
As one of the first people in this thread compared them to the LotR wizards, I must say they do seem to have a lot in common.
Great powers, strong (in some at least, Myrdred is an avatara and he's power hungry at best) dedication to good.
But they do not have staggering powers on their own.
Alric uses artifacts to boost his powers, I'm sure other avatara do as well.
By the way in the picture of three of the Nine (in the Gate of Storms journal entry, from left to right which ones are they?
I can't tell which is which.
