I think that the avatara are roughly equal to the fallen lords, on average. Mazzarin was probably the most powerful sorcerer, and(assuming) if the watcher had no thrallies and just challenged him face to face, both at the peak of their power, mazzarin would have mopped the floor with him. They never challenge the fallen lords directly because they are surrounded by the fallen! they first have to fight their way through the entire army of them before they get a shot at the leader. so they would have to challenge more than the fallen lord. With rabican, he was challenging shiver on her own playing field, the dream-world. She had the home-field advantage, and was very likely experienced in the art of dream-dueling, but with the advice given by the head, rabican kicked her ass and won, not because he cheated, but because he had power, and the power to exploit a weakness. Shades arent that tough, regular units kick the crap out of them, Avatara are tougher, regular units die
