I'd say thta they were definately more powerful - they were powerful 1,000 years ago, and have had that time at least to learn even more powers and hone their skills. But they wouldn't always show up in person, in case somehow they were injured, so they would fight through their armies - and never underestimate the resolve and strength of desperate men who know that they fight for the lives of not only themselves but everyone they know.
